Stephen Wertheim is a historian of U.S. foreign policy. He is a visiting assistant professor of history at Columbia University and a visiting scholar at the Saltzman Institute for War and Peace Studies. He is currently completing a book on the birth of U.S. global leadership in World War II. His research examines concepts of American power and international order from the late nineteenth century to the present. He received a PhD from Columbia University in 2015, after which he held fellowships at Princeton University and the University of Cambridge. He also writes essays on current events; these have recently appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.
