Description

In the sometimes-contentious debates around the role of online services in our societies, the need for more transparency often seems like something everyone can agree on. But just what is meant by “transparency”—and how does it feed into large goals of promoting accountability and safeguarding human rights?  This session will feature expert discussion of a variety of topics that fit under the broad transparency umbrella, including transparency reporting, researcher access to data, user notice & due process, and auditing or third-party assessment of company practices. We will discuss the goals and audiences of each type of transparency, and examine what’s working, what isn’t, and what the roadblocks are to making real progress.

Keynote will be provided by Neil Chilson.
