David C. Hendrickson is Professor of Political Science at Colorado College, where has taught since 1983. He is the author of eight books, including Peace Pact: The Lost World of the American Founding (2003) and Union, Nation, or Empire: The American Debate over International Relations, 1789-1941 (2009). His latest book is Republic in Peril: American Empire and the Liberal Tradition (2018). He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University in 1982. He co-authored three books with Robert W. Tucker, one on Thomas Jefferson’s foreign policy, another on the causes of the American War of Independence, and a third called The Imperial Temptation: The New World Order and America’s Purpose, published by the Council on Foreign Relations in 1992. Hendrickson’s works on US national strategy in the 1980s were The Future of American Strategy (1987) and Reforming Defense: The State of American Civil-Military Relations (1988). He has written for numerous foreign policy journals and was book reviewer for Foreign Affairs (“United States” section) from 1994 to 1998. He was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and has lived since 1983 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
