Alvin Edwards is a native of Joliet, Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Wheaton College, Wheaton Illinois, and his Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Union, School of Theology, and his Ph.D. in Education, from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

He is married to the former Ms. Barbara A. Singleton. They have four children - Alvin, Brianna, Isaac, Brittany, eight grandchildren.

Reverend Edwards is the Pastor of Mount Zion First African Baptist Church (July 1981), in Charlottesville, Virginia. Previously, he served as Pastor of the Second Mount Olive Baptist Church, in Little Plymouth, Virginia, and as Minister of Evangelism at the Fifth Street Baptist Church, in Richmond, Virginia. While attending Wheaton College, he served as Youth Minister and as an associate minister of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, in Joliet, Illinois, under the late Rev. Isaac Singleton, Sr., Pastor.

Reverend Edwards has served on many boards including the Charlottesville School Board, Monticello Area Community Action Agency (MACAA), Alliance For Interfaith Ministries, Charlottesville Redevelopment Housing Authority, Charlottesville/Albemarle Boys and Girls Club, Planning Coordinating Council, Charlottesville City Council, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration Committee, and the African-American Summit Committee. In addition he has served as teacher for the National Baptist Congress for Christian Education, as well as the Lecturer in the Youth Division, ages 13-14, Board of Medicine for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and others. Finally, he has served as the Mayor of the City of Charlottesville.

Reverend Edwards has been the keynote speaker for association meetings and state conventions. He has served as a Christian Education Consultant for Progressive National Baptist Convention, under the auspices of David C. Cook Publishing Company.

He has received numerous awards - Virginia Film Festival, scholarship recipient from the Illinois State Baptist Convention - Women's Auxiliary, Central Virginia Minority Business Association, Omega Man of the year, and others.
