Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín was elected mayor of Berkeley on November 8, 2016 and is the city’s first Latino mayor and the city’s youngest mayor in 100 years. Mayor Arreguín is the son and grandson of farmworkers and the first in his family to go to college. Prior to becoming mayor, Arreguín served eight years as a City of Berkeley councilman, representing District 4. In that role, he worked to expand affordable housing, helped raise the city’s minimum wage and co-write the Downtown Plan to revitalize the heart of the city. Arreguín has authored more than 300 pieces of successful legislation during his time on the council. Mayor Arreguín previously served on the City’s Zoning Adjustments Board, the Housing Advisory Commission and the Rent Stabilization Board, which he chaired. He earned his B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley.
